Fit, dimensions & layout
An 80 × 80 mm floor with 35 mm walls starts as a 150 × 150 mm square before corner tabs are shaped. The card thickness affects the outside size. Measure the finished base before drawing the lid: give its internal opening a little clearance on both dimensions, then prototype. Do not use the nominal 80 mm floor as the final lid measurement.
The illustration is a concept, not a scale drawing or a record of a tested build. Use a full-size template or dry fit to check the written layout with your actual materials.

Choose materials deliberately
Make it, step by step
Prototype the base
Draw an 80 mm square with 35 mm walls and corner tabs on scrap paper.
Make the base
Transfer the successful net to cardstock. Score every fold before cutting tabs.
Check before moving onScore the floor rectangle first and check its four dimensions before trimming any corner material.
Fit a larger lid
Allow 2–3 mm beyond the finished outside base dimensions and make 15 mm walls. Test clearance with your card thickness.
Glue square
Fold walls and glue tabs inside, holding each corner square.
Check before moving onSet the glued base on a flat surface while checking the diagonals, rather than squeezing it in one hand.
Test the lid
Dry both parts before fitting. Use tissue and lightweight contents.
Troubleshoot this project
Why does the lid grip one corner?
What to check. The base may be slightly out of square or the lid clearance may be uneven.
Next move. Compare both diagonals and opposite wall heights before increasing lid size.
Why are the corners bulky?
What to check. Full-width tabs may overlap or push into adjoining walls.
Next move. Taper the tabs in a prototype and keep them inside the wall outline; do not cut through the corner fold.
The final check
The lid lifts easily and every tab is secure.
A quick prototype accounts for the thickness that can make a lid frustratingly tight.
