PLAN BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Fit, dimensions & layout

Choose the binding edge before arranging prints. On 100 × 150 mm pages, a two-hole guide can place holes along the 150 mm side, around 30 mm from each end and 12 mm from the edge. Treat these as prototype positions and check they leave enough unpunched card. Avoid putting a bulky memory item close to either hole.

The illustration is a concept, not a scale drawing or a record of a tested build. Use a full-size template or dry fit to check the written layout with your actual materials.

Choose materials deliberately

Wider ribbon

It needs a larger hole and can crowd the binding. Use a test page to check that a bow allows a full turn without tearing.

Fewer pages

A thinner booklet is easier to open with ribbon. Keep the same hole guide so additional pages can be prepared consistently later.

Make it, step by step

  1. Set the page size

Cut matching pages and leave generous room along the binding edge.

  2. Make a hole guide

Punch two holes in a scrap template and use it for every page.

    Check before moving on

Mark the template top and front so it cannot be accidentally flipped while punching the stack.

  3. Arrange the memories

Keep thick embellishments away from the binding and leave caption space.

  4. Thread the ribbons

Tie through each hole pair loosely enough for the pages to turn.

    Check before moving on

Tie a loose test bow with blank pages and turn every leaf before attaching the keepsakes.

  5. Test every page

Loosen tight bows and keep this adult keepsake away from small children.

IF SOMETHING DOES NOT FIT

Troubleshoot this project

Why do pages fan unevenly?

What to check. Holes may have been measured separately and drifted between pages.

Next move. Use one template and repunch only if enough sound card remains; otherwise replace the misaligned page.

Why can the book not lie open?

What to check. Ribbons may be tied too tightly or content may be too bulky near the edge.

Next move. Loosen bows and move raised items away from the binding; do not force the pages flat.

The final check

Pages turn freely without tearing at the ribbons.

A detail worth keeping

Note dates and names on prints before mounting them.

FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Leave paper between stitch holes

The embroidered card uses a light outline, not a dense stitched fill. Test the tightest curve on spare card and keep holes distinct. A liner conceals thread ends but does not restore torn paper, so control spacing and tension before completing the letter.
